Travelling by Train in Italy

Often villa and apartment renters in Italy prefer a hire car to get around with as they travel in groups and many of our villas and apartments are too inaccessible to be practical for public transport. However, we have insterted into our program some rental properties which are suited to couples and groups travelling around by public transport.

Italian Railways have a good Internet site for looking up timetable information, prices and even booking tickets online (advisable for tourist destinations in peak time) > Link
Otherwise, tickets can be bought in advance from all train stations and newspaper shops and stands sell a paper timetable. Tickets can be paid for by credit card.

Italy is also well served by local and regional bus companies. You will find information at local Tourist Offices. For trips within cities, tickets must be purchased prior to boarding and are available from Giornalaio and Tabaccaio. Remember to validate your train and bus ticket in designated machines in the stations or on board of buses. Travelling without a validated ticket is subject to fines.

If you are in doubt and would like to check the price of hiring a car, click on our link to Autoeurope
