Driving tips in Italy

A car offers many advantages in terms of freedom of movement, and many of the rental villas and apartments in Italy are a little inaccessible without one, however, a word of warning – some old roads were not designed with the car in mind, and the local population show little regard for road rules. Have a little (or a lot) of patience and 'nudge' your way around carefully.

Unfortunately in Italy, the signage and directions on the road are atrocious and indications are often placed in inconvenient positions (like around the corner). The Italians have an expression 'sempre avanti' which simply translated means if you’re in doubt and can’t find an indication, keep following the main road you're on (until you find one). Traffic hotspots can be found during peak season, that is in Italy the month of August.

On booking your rental villa with us, we will provide detailed arrival instructions which indicate directions and checkpoints along the road from wherever you are arriving to the villa or apartment accommodation.

Parking

In most Italian cities you can park within blue lines and must buy pre paid scratch tickets at tobacconists and newspapers shops. In other areas you will find a sign with a clock and marker. You should set your dial (often located under the rear vision mirror) to the time of arrival and respect the time limit indicated on the sign (often 15, 60 or 90 minutes). If you do not have a dial, write the time on a piece of paper with 'arrivo' (arrival).
