Siena is one of the most beautiful towns of Tuscany and perhaps Italy. Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti the town is set on three hills and is mostly pedenstrian only. At the centre of the town is the large Piazza del Campo, noted for the Palio horse race held each July and August and full of activity year round. An important university town, Siena has wonderful outdoor cafes, piazzas, churches and museums.

Apart from the wonderful cultural landmarks of the Duomo and St Maria della Scala, Siena is also home to one of the oldest Universities in Europe, ensuring a vibrant Italian student atmosphere throughout the academic year. South of Siena, the Arbia valley leads to the hill-top town of Montalcino, home to the famous Brunello wine. And the area La Crete stretches out, amazing visitors with its harsh rock formations and unique landscape. Westwards we head towards the coast, to captivitating coastline towns like Castiglione della Pescaia, and nature reserves like the area called Maremma. With such natural beauty within easy reach by car or public transport, Siena is a good place to base yourself for a Tuscan experience.
