The city of Siena lies in the very heart of Tuscany and her beauty and charm have captivated visitors for centuries. Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most beautiful places in all of Italy. Here there are world class art, stunning medieval architecture and first class cuisine at your finger tips. The center of Sienese life is the Piazza del Campo where just about everyone takes an evening stroll. It is also the setting for the spectacular Palio horse race which is held every July 2nd and August 16th.
At Monticiano, in the 12th century, this agricultural and holiday centre (375m, pop 1875) had a castle belonging to the bishops of Volterra (remains of the walls still exist), which then came under Sienesedomination. In the piazza at the entrance to the village stands the late-Romanesque "church of Sant'Agostino"(1291-1362), with a Baroque interior.
